Looking to add a little (or a lot) of flavor and spice to your cooking? Cajun seasoning is one of the best ways to do so!

I love adding heat and flavor to all of my dishes, so when it came time to make the best cajun seasoning recipe homemade, I was over the moon.

We’ll grab more than a few spices, stir them up in a bowl, adjust as needed, then be well on our way to making this bold seasoning. Let’s do this!

What is Cajun Seasoning?

Cajun seasoning is a seasoning blend that combines ground black pepper, cayenne pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika and more to create a spicy, bold flavor.

Originating from Louisiana, Cajun seasoning is a flavorful, bold mix of spices that showcases Cajun cooking: a fusion of Native American, West African, and Caribbean styles combined with French cuisine. [1]

Ingredients

  • Paprika: smoked or sweet paprika will work fine. I lean towards smoked for a smoky take that adds to the heat and flavor of this seasoning.
  • Garlic Powder
  • Salt: fine table salt works best here to ensure the salt spreads evenly throughout your cajun seasoning.
  • Ground Black Pepper: you can use freshly ground black pepper for an extra bold and fresh flavor, or enjoy the convenience of store-bought.
  • Ground white pepper: traditional recipes for Cajun seasoning call for ground white pepper, but we’re going to skip it to make this homemade recipe easier.
  • Onion Powder
  • Dried Oregano
  • Cayenne: you can easily adjust this for your desired spice level. If sensitive to heat, start with just 1 teaspoon of cayenne. If you love heat, you can increase ad needed.
  • Dried Thyme

How to Use Homemade Cajun Seasoning

This Cajun seasoning recipe is spicy, salty, and herby with a smokiness that adds so much depth and flavor as a BBQ rub, seasoning for appetizers, and more. It’s also the secret ingredient in my irresistible Onion Ring Sauce recipe.

Veggies: sprinkle on your favorite veggies for a flavor kick, such as roasted bell peppers and blistered green beans, potato dishes like roasted carrots and potatoes, and garlic parmesan potatoes.

Protein: try this homemade seasoning on tofu, fish, meats, and more.

Snacks: sprinkle on baked tortilla chips, pita chips, air fryer french fries and air fryer onion rings, or even toasted, buttered bread like garlic toast for a spicy kick.

Sandwiches and Soup: I always like to add a little zest to my sandos and soup with a sprinkle of this Cajun seasoning. Try it on Pizza Sliders, a grilled cheese, a Tomato Sandwich and more.

Recipe Tips

Here are a few of my easy and simple tips for customizing this cajun seasoning recipe to your liking.

  • Spice: Try adjusting the cajun seasoning recipe as you make it. Add more cayenne for higher spice, less for those who are heat sensitive.
  • Boldness of Flavor: You can amp up the boldness of this recipe by using freshly ground black pepper, salt, and even homemade garlic salt or seasoned salt.
  • Salt: If you follow a low sodium diet, reduce the spice or leave it out altogether—you can add the salt in separately as needed.
