TO OUR READERS Hampton residents want stop sign gone BY SARAH FORD correspondentqconline.com HAMPTON -Residents of Hampton Woods turned up at Monday's village board meeting to support the removal of a stop sign at the intersection of Barrington Drive and Cherry Hill Court. The village put up the sign nine years ago when vegetation was planted near the intersection and had promised residents that the stop sign could be removed if the vegetation was removed. Since that recently happened, residents want to see the sign gone, too.

Trustees raised concerns about removing the stop sign, saying that the population has increased, and with three directions coming in, the right of way may be unclear. "It's an extra measure of safety for people who turn into the drive," said Trustee James Garrison, adding that "underlying safety issues" call for some sort of signage. Trustee Mickey Van Dieren said she would vote to remove the sign if a warning sign indicating right of way was added. She asked that the stop sign remain until a new sign replaces it. In other action, the board approved the purchase of two used STARCOM radios for the fire department at a cost of $360, approved weekly cleaning service for the village hall at a cost of $60 per week, and approved the final pay application for Brandt Construction for street repairs of $26,261.65.

The final cost of the projects was $80,548.55, well under the initial estimate of $106,953.55. The board also approved abating property taxes for payment of $170,000 in General Obligation Street Improvement Bonds, using the money collected from a half-cent sales tax increase from 2011. Trustees also approved the 2013 tax levy of $241,301. The Dispatch and The Rock Island Argus provide free obituary notices up to 25 lines long. He was 85. He had a pulmonary illness, according to French media.

Molinaro made more than 30 feature films, some with top French stars such as Catherine Deneuve, Brigitte Bardot and Jean-Paul Belmondo. Although he was well established in France before "La Cage Aux Folles," American audiences didn't know much of him until his madcap tale of a gay couple and their drag nightclub. When the film came to the U.S. in 1979, singer Anita Bryant had become nationally known for her condemnation of hom*osexuality A year earlier, San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, who was gay, had been gunned down. "La Cage," though criticized for its cliche drag queens, offered what was widely seen as a comic antidote to the rhetoric of the day.

Mercer Co. schools set tax levy BY CATHY DECKER correspondentqconiine.com ALEDO The Mercer County School Board on Wednesday approved a 2014 real estate tax levy of $5,989,725, up $285,224 from the 2013 levy Superintendent Alan Boucher told the board the levy is at the maximum rate for all funds and the actual equalized assessed valuation won't be known for sure until June next year He added the tax rate will remain the same as last year. He said that residential, industrial and commercial values have flat-lined. "Farmland is going up about 10 percent," he added.

The district budget will be hit with a $600,000 cut because a consolidation incentive has ended. The board agreed to hire electrician Tom Hammond, of Muscatine, to install three new exhaust fans in the high school gymnasium at a cost of $5,653.46. The district is also seeking a $250,000 energy and maintenance grant for new windows at the Joy junior high and New Boston elementary buildings. In other business the board approved the high school's improvement plan, which will focus on teaching the common core, creating a climate to eliminate bullying and providing professional development for its staff.
